Tony Bellew will fight for the WBC world title on a Sunday night!

Change of date for Tony Bellew’s world title challenge against Ilunga Makuba
Tony ‘The Bomber’ Bellew will now face the southpaw Ilunga Makuba for the WBC Cruiserweight championship of the world at Goodison park on May 29th which is actually a Sunday!

The fight was meant to be on June 4th but Matchroom were not granted a licence for some reason to host an outdoor event on this day at Goodison Park. The Saturday before the 4th is the 28th of May but this is the night that Ricky Burns challenges Michelle Di Rocco for the WBA Light welterweight title in Scotland so it would be impossible for Matchroom to host two big shows in different countries on the same night.

The way that Eddie Hearn and co have hot around this logistical problem is to host the Bellew fight the day after the Burns fight which is the 29th May, a bank holiday Sunday.

I personally think that this gamble will pay off and I wouldn’t be surprised if they sell over 30,000 tickets for this mega show if the undercard lives up to expectation of local talent in meaningful fights.
