Canelo Alvarez won the middleweight title on Saturday night by majority decision over Gennady Golovkin who’s suffered his first loss as a pro.
Just a year after the two P4P stars met, the second fight was almost as close as a first fight. Canelo changed tactics and came forward nearly the entire fight with GGG trying to counter Alvarez. Both fighters landed lots of shots and Golovkin controlled some rounds with his jab but Canelo landed more power shots. Neither fighter was ever in any trouble of going down. After the 12 action-packed rounds, the judges announced a majority decision, where two judges favoured Alvarez 115-113, while a third had it 114-114.
“He’s a great fighter but I’m a great fighter too and I showed it tonight,” Alvarez said.
GGG left the ring after the majority decision announcement without a word. Golovkin got a few stitches, and then came out for the post-fight press conference. He wasn’t in the good mood, wears sunglasses and said:
”I’m not going to say who won tonight, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges. I thought it was a very good fight for the fans, and very exciting, I thought I fought better than he did. First of all, I want to congratulate Canelo. I feel like I’m a champion and he’s also a champion,” he said. “He didn’t run but it doesn’t mean he won the fight, of course, we would like to have a third fight, we will continue to negotiate that, it would be great to have a third fight.” He’s closing statement he said: “I come back, guys, I come back.”
I scored the fight 116-112 for Golovkin, which a lot of experts agree with, but I wasn’t judge on the fight so this is only a opinion.
Both fighter agreed the 3rd fight, so hopefully we can see it again in 2019.
