Sonny Frederickson has recently broken back into the world top 15 after emerging victorious in his USBA Super Lightweight contest against Manuel Mendez in November of 2018.
Frederickson, who is now ranked in the top 15 by both the WBO and IBF, is now turning his attention to the champions of the 140-pound division, as he looks to make 2019 his breakout year.
The Ohio native opened up on his plans for the year, and what fight fans can expect from him.
Frederickson said, “Fight fans can always expect entertainment from me. I am a massive Super Lightweight at 6’1, but I live the life and I always make the weight properly. People think I would struggle being this size but they are very much mistaken.
“I am an all-action fighter, and that’s what fans want to see. I come from a very working-class part of the world and that reflects in my fighting style. I love to fight and I love to give people value for money when they come to watch me live or watch me on TV.
The Toledo resident continued, “I want to be a World Champion. That’s what I got into boxing for. I’m highly ranked in the IBF and WBO now, so I would like to fight someone above me in the ratings next and take their ranking.
“The goal is to fight for a world title in the not so distant future. I’ve had 21 pro fights now and I am only getting better with age. The time will soon be right for me to challenge the likes of Maurice Hooker and relieve them of their world title belts.”
The 24-year-old has been sharing a ring with former Lightweight World Champion Robert Easter Jr in a sparring capacity. The likeable Super Lightweight discussed training with the former IBF titleholder.
He said, “Sparring Robert Easter Jr has been a great experience. He is in fantastic shape and we’ve both got some great work from each other.
“Robert is a great fighter, and I’m 100% that he will be World Champion again. I have done well in sparring with Robert, and that makes me believe that I will also become a World Champion too in the very near future.”
Frederickson is co-managed by Las Vegas-based Mike Leanardi of Victory Sports and Entertainment, who also represents fan favourite Badou Jack. Leanardi opened up about his Ohio based charge.
He said, “Sonny is a blue-collar kid with a blue-collar attitude and fights in a blue collar way. He appeals to the working class audience. He is value for money and this is what fight fans and broadcasters want to see.
“He is currently a free agent but it’s only a matter of time before one of the big promoters snaps him up as has all the capabilities to become a genuine working-class hero.”
Leanardi continued, “If you haven’t seen Sonny Fredrickson fight yet you are in for a treat. This kid will fight anyone and he will take the fight to them and produce fireworks when doing so!”
