Puerto Rico’s Alberto Machado retains his WBA Super-Featherweight title with a comprehensive points victory at the Hardrock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and sets up some huge fights in the 130lb division.
With onlookers at ringside including fellow countrymen Miguel Cotto who would have been engaged with the Munguia-Smith spectacle headlining the Golden Boy show live on HBO, the unbeaten Machado needed to impress and so he did with a 120-107 margin on all three judges scorecards.
The opening round was a terrific start for Machado, flooring the Ghanaian challenger and looked to be an early night for the defending champion yet Mensah hung on in to survive the round.
Machado showed his superior skills and footwork, moving at angles and showing an impressive repertoire of shots and these were having a damaging effect on the opponent standing across the ring.
The now 20-0 Machado maintained his unbeaten record banking round after round with the better work rate and relentlessly walking Mensah down. Mensah was dropped once again and one would have thought that Machado would step on the gas but down the stretch, he looked a little flat and was satisfied with going the distance.
In terms of having a live opponent in front of him in the future, Machado will need to do more to get the job done against the elite in the stacked super-featherweight mix. Gervonta Davis holds the ‘Super’ title beating Jesus Cuellar a few months back but hasn’t been active since.
A great time to be a 130lb fighter with Lomachenko moving up to lightweight in his fight against Linares and looks like he’ll be targeting the bigger names like Mikey Garcia and elsewhere which opens things up for the talented fighters coming through.
